If you’re lucky enough to be heading to Cornwall this summer, you’re in for a treat. As well as looking forward to devouring Cornish pasties, relaxing on the beach and settling into your lovely classic holiday cottage with views that stretch out over the sea, there are a number of activities to fill your diary with. Here’s a selection of some of the things that are happening in Cornwall over the summer months. There’s a great deal more to see and do in addition to the suggestions below, so get researching and enjoy your staycation!
June
National Maritime Museum, Tattoo Exhibition
When: 17th March 2017 to 7th Jan 2018
Where: Falmouth
This exhibition is a quirky addition to your Cornish holiday to-do list, and whether you’re tattooed or not, you’re bound to be amazed at what you learn. Find out about the history of British tattooing (remembering to ask about Britain’s pioneering female tattoo artist, Jessie Knight) and feast your eyes on this often-misunderstood art form.
Mevagissey Feast Week
When: 25th June 2017 to 1st July 20117
Where: Mevagissey
Join throngs of locals and tourists for what is believed to be the longest surviving festival in Cornwall. The week-long festival dates back to 1754, and this year you can expect to see musical performances, children’s entertainment, parades, foot markets, a huge fireworks display and more.
July
Padstow Village Rally & Country Fair
When: 30th June 2017 to 2nd July 2017
Where: Padstow
If you’re interested in history or enjoy watching re-enactments from a bygone era, you’ll be fascinated by the Padstow Village Rally & Country Fair. Peruse steam trains, tractors, cars, bikes, stationary engines, models and more; be amazed at the stunt show and whirlwind helicopter display; or take a gentle amble around the countryside corner. There’s even something for those who aren’t enamoured with the history, with live music performances, chainsaw artists, and other entertainers; food and drink stalls; and an area for rare breeds, horses and pets.
Tunes in the Dunes
When: 30th June 2017 to 2nd July 2017
Where: Perranporth
For something more modern and lively, why not book tickets for Tunes in the Dunes? This is Cornwall’s largest beach festival, where visitors get to dance the night (and day) away with their favourite musicians playing against the backdrop of the wild Atlantic Ocean. It’s perfect for families as well as singles, groups and couples, with acts this year including Clean Bandit, Example and Billy Ocean. Tunes in the Dunes is also hosting the British Longboarding Championships, so book your tickets now if you don’t want to miss out.
August
Journey into Space at Eden
When: 27th July 2017 to 3rd September 2017
Where: St Austell
If you or your little ones are fascinated with space, there’s never been a better time to visit Eden. The Biomes are filled with an extra-terrestrial plant display, and you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled for the aliens who have been stranded at Eden for the summer…
Falmouth Week
When: 4th August 2017 to 13th August 2017
Where: Falmouth
As the largest sailing regatta in the south west, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to snap a photo of the 450+ yachts that are racing through the beautiful landscape. Be there on Wednesday for Champagne day – a race for the biggest yachts of all – where the race course finishes in the inner harbour as it’s quite a sight to behold. And, there’s plenty to keep you occupied on land too: stick around for the fireworks and samba bands, soak in the music and sample the food on offer in the stalls.
