Australia has been named the sunset capital of the world in a new study, which highlights the best destinations to watch the sun go down.
The research, by luxury travel experts eShores, found that Australia, Argentina and Mexico are the best countries to enjoy a sunset, with Spain the top sunset destination in Europe.
To create the index, eShores ranked every country around the world for light pollution, distance from the ‘ideal’ temperature to enjoy a sunset, romance levels, and number of cultural and natural UNESCO heritage sites to frame the sunset.
The full top ten, with scores, is:

With more people prioritising wellness travel than ever before, sunsets offer a myriad of health benefits for holidaymakers.
They can reduce stress, boost mood, improve sleep quality by regulating circadian rhythm, and offer a great opportunity for reflection.
See below for more information on the top destinations, as well as some of the best sunset locations in each country:
1. Australia
Consistently strong across the five ranking categories, Australia is well known for its stunning natural beauty, finishing joint-second in the UNESCO natural sites ranking.
eShores recommends: Uluru – also known as Ayers Rock, this iconic sandstone monolith near the centre of Australia is a national treasure and a photographer’s dream at sunset.
2. Argentina
Argentina takes second spot, performing strongly across all five categories in the index, including appearing in the top 10 for ideal temperature for sunset viewing.
eShores recommends: Patagonia – this remote region is awash with towering glaciers and snow-capped mountain peaks to frame sunsets.
3. Mexico
Mexico also scores well across the board, with particularly high scores for cultural and natural UNESCO sites, as well as romance and temperature.
eShores recommends: Punta Cometa – this scenic outcrop provides a sensational vista where walkers gather each night to watch the sunset.

eShores director, Gavin Lapidus, says of the research:
“We’re noticing more and more customers prioritising wellness when planning their trips. Travellers are looking to strike the balance between adventurous and tranquil to find a combination that allows them to explore cities and relax in equal measure.
“With that in mind, finding the best places to sit back and enjoy the sunset seemed a great way to find that balance; no matter how busy or relaxing you like your holidays, there’s always time for a beautiful sunset at the end of the day.
“It was great to see so much representation of Africa and South America in the results – destinations that have so much to offer but are often overlooked.”
