Yorkshire is one of the most stunning areas in the UK and, if you’re planning to visit this part of the country, it’s good to have an idea of the things you want to see and do whilst you are there. Yorkshire is quite a big area and there are many towns and cities located within the county – all with their own attractions and must-see spots. From rolling green landscapes to bustling inner-city spots and dramatic waterfalls to top-rated restaurants, Yorkshire has everything you could ever dream of. With that in mind, let’s take a look at 5 of the best things to do when visiting Yorkshire.
Take A Walk Down The Shambles in York
York is steeped in history. Small enough to be easily explored on foot, this city certainly packs a punch when it comes to things to do. But, one thing that should be at the top of your list is taking a walk down the Shambles. It is one of York’s more famous landmarks and is said to be one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe that is packed with quirky shops, bars and cafes. It is said that the Shambles is the inspiration behind Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter film franchise and there are plenty of nods to this throughout – if you’re a fan of the films, then you need to visit The Potions Cauldron for some wizardry fun.
Enjoy Fresh Fish and Chips in Whitby
Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire and there is plenty to see and do around the town depending on your interests. However, one of the biggest attractions here is visiting Whitby Abbey as it is famous for its inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. As it is nestled right on the sea and has a river running through it, you’re never too far away from amazing fresh fish and chips. If you’ve walked up the 199 steps to the Abbey, then you’re well deserving of a portion to re-energise you for the rest of your adventures. It’s very heavily disputed as to which fish and chip shop is the best in Whitby, but there are plenty to choose from!
Go Shopping in Leeds
Leeds is one of the busiest cities in the UK and, as a result, this means that there are plenty of shopping spots located around the city. With the compact and easily walkable city centre, it’s easy to navigate through the different shopping areas, whether you’re looking for High Street names or quirky and unique shops. One must-visit spot is the Victoria Leeds shopping centre – one of the best shopping centres in Leeds – to explore the amazing luxurious shops and admire the old Victorian Quarter. If you fancy a bite to eat or a coffee afterwards, you’ll be spoilt for choice, but a visit to The Ivy is a must!
Visit Hardraw Force in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
Hardraw Force is the tallest single-drop waterfall in England, so if you want to explore and see some of the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, then a visit here is a must. Located just between Kendal and Darlington, it’s pretty easy to find and, even better, you don’t need to do a big hike or climb to get there – it’s just 300m or so from the entry spot. From there, there are a few different walks you can take, whether you want to see the falls from the bottom or walk across the top. You can explore as much of the rest of the park as you want!
Go Back In Time With A Visit to Haworth
With its cobblestone streets, vintage and antique shops and reminiscent shop fronts, visiting Haworth is like taking a step back in time. This little town is easily one of the most beautiful in Yorkshire, neatly tucked away in the South Pennines. It is where the real-life Brontë sisters are from, plus where the classic film The Railway Children was filmed. But, as well as this, the town looks like it is straight from a storybook, with steam trains, rugged hills, coastal paths and cosy little cafes. If you’re a history fan or just want to spend time doing something a little different, then plan your visit around the Annual Howarth 1940s weekend.
